Over the last few weeks, our teams have been hard at work in the Centennial Park carrying out major arboricultural works:

  • Checking and felling the buckthorn
  • Cleaning/felling work at the entrance to the Park (Tecumseh/Fenwood)
  • Clearing viewpoints along the lakeshore
  • Widening and securing paths (felling dead trees and safety pruning)

These actions are designed to ensure the safety of users and preserve the health of the urban forest.

Buckthorn, an invasive plant

Native to Eurasia and introduced to Quebec in the early 20th century, buckthorn is a particularly invasive shrub in Montreal, adapting to a wide variety of environments. Its leaves, which emerge early in the spring, create a very dense canopy that hinders the regeneration of our native plants, which is why it is important to remove it.
