Fallen leaves: an invaluable resource!

Share

The fall season means fallen leaves and garden clean-up! Every year, some residents blow or push fallen leaves into the street. In addition to clogging storm drains, preventing normal water flow and clogging road sweepers, this practice contravenes municipal by-law R-2014-094 and is subject to a minimum fine of $150.

Here are some better fall habits to adopt:

  • Practise leafcycling: simply leave the leaves on the ground and shred them with the lawnmower. The lawn will absorb and benefit from the invaluable nutrients created by the decomposition of dead leaves.
  • Use fallen leaves as a natural fertilizer by placing them at the foot of your trees, shrubs, flower beds and vegetable gardens. This will also protect them from winter cold and erosion.
  • Place fallen leaves in your brown bin, paper bags or cardboard boxes for the organic waste collection on Mondays.
