Larvae have been found in branches as small as 1.1 cm in diameter.<\/p><p>Emerald ash borer infestation is very difficult to detect early. When infested trees are found, it\u2019s often one year or more after the attack has occurred. Additionally, there are several other factors affecting ash tree health that may disguise the presence of the emerald ash borer.<\/p><p>Estimates show the emerald ash borer has killed several hundred thousand ash trees in Essex County, Ontario, and 8 to 10 million ash trees in southeastern Michigan. Tree losses include landscape, rural and woodlot trees. If not effectively controlled, the emerald ash borer is expected to spread across the entire North American range of ash, causing widespread tree mortality.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5a4dd4d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5a4dd4d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Four signs of infestation<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d418b3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d418b3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol><li><strong>Crown dieback:<\/strong> the first sign of emerald ash borer infestation is thinning or dieback of the outermost extremities of the crown of the ash tree due to the effect of the under-bark larvae choking off nutrient flow.<\/li><li><strong>New growth shoots around the trunk\u00a0<\/strong>of the ash treeShoots (suckers) can be seen growing around the portion of the trunk lower than the larval infestation as the tree attempts to survive.<\/li><li><strong>Presence of D-shaped exit holes:<\/strong> as the young adult emerald ash borer emerges from under the ash tree\u2019s bark, it creates a D-shaped hole in the bark approximately 4 mm (3\/16&#8243;) wide.<\/li><li><strong>Woodpeckers:<\/strong> they are very good at finding larvae under the bark. Increased woodpecker feeding activity in your ash tree could point to infestation of the tree by the emerald ash borer.<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-45a76ca elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"45a76ca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The emerald ash borer\u2019s affected area changes as the advancement of the pest progresses.
