This work focuses on an important part of our infrastructure: <strong>the stormwater retention basin<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Until now, the park had an <strong>open basin<\/strong>, which required more maintenance and offered limited capacity. Our engineering team is in the process of replacing it with a <strong>fully underground basin<\/strong>, better suited for today\u2019s climate challenges. The main installation work is <strong>almost completed<\/strong>, with final steps scheduled in the coming weeks.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2705 Why an underground basin?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Intense rainfall events are becoming more frequent across Qu\u00e9bec. When large amounts of water fall in a short period, they must be absorbed or redirected quickly.<\/p><p>An underground basin helps:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>temporarily store rainwater<\/strong> during major storms;<\/li><li><strong>reduce surface runoff<\/strong>;<\/li><li><strong>prevent localized flooding<\/strong>;<\/li><li><strong>reduce stress on the stormwater system<\/strong> when demand peaks.<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83c\udf27\ufe0f Part of a larger system<\/strong><\/h2><p>One important \u2014 and often invisible \u2014 fact about stormwater management is that <strong>flooding doesn\u2019t always occur where the rain falls<\/strong>. It often results from overflow or overload elsewhere in the network.<\/p><p>By increasing the capacity of the basin at Terry Fox Park, we help <strong>balance water flow throughout the system<\/strong>, which can reduce the risk of flooding <strong>in other neighbourhoods<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This principle will also guide upcoming projects, including those linked to the <strong>Oasis Program<\/strong>, aimed at strengthening Dollard-des-Ormeaux\u2019s climate resilience.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2705 Unchanged on the surface \u2014 stronger underneath<\/strong><\/h2><p>Although the new basin is completely hidden underground, it represents a major improvement to our infrastructure.
