General principles
From 15 May to 1 September, watering of lawns and other plants using a garden hose, porous hose or removable sprinkler is permitted only between 8.00 pm and 11.00 pm. Watering using an automatic sprinkler system is permitted only at night between 2 am and 5 am on the following days:
- Residents with an EVEN numbered address may water their gardens on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
- Residents with an ODD numbered address may water their gardens on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Note: Watering is not permitted on Mondays.
Watering permits (residential and commercial)
Special permits are issued via the City’s Online Services system.
RESIDENTIAL
- A special permit is required to water a newly laid lawn.
- The permit is valid for a period of 21 days.
- Watering is permitted every day except Mondays, at the specified times (see General Principles)
COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL
- A special permit is required to water any lawn.
- Watering is permitted between 2 am and 5 am, in accordance with the odd-even rule.
Other conditions
- Swimming pools: one (annual) filling is permitted between midnight and 6 am. A special permit is required for any additional filling.
- Cars and private driveways: washing is permitted provided that the garden hose is fitted with an automatic shut-off valve and that wastage is avoided.
- Suspension: The Director has the authority to prohibit the use of water for watering, filling and washing vehicles outdoors if circumstances (such as drought, a burst water main or an emergency) so require.
Failure to comply with the above provisions will result in the offender being liable to a fine.
