For reasons of safety and aesthetics, the City of Dollard-des-Ormeaux adopted regulations concerning fences for the entire territory.

Before building or modifying a fence, contact the Urban Planning and Engineering Department to enquire about the specific standards in force.

Do I need a permit?

No permit is required for the installation of a fence, with the exception or a fence installed to separate private property from a main artery or collector street, as defined in the zoning by-law.

However, the construction of any fence must comply with the zoning by-law.

Two neighbours can agree to build a common fence on the line separating their properties. However, in the event of a dispute over responsibility (joint ownership) and the location of the fence in relation to the property lines, the Civil Code (Quebec) must be referred to.

A fence must be located 1.5 metres or more from a fire hydrant.

Any yard containing a pool or a spa must be surrounded by a fence with a minimum height of 1.5 metres and a maximum height of 1.8 metres, in compliance with the zoning by-law.  Additionally, a separate barrier specifically for the pool is required.
