Snow removal operations require close collaboration between our teams and our residents. Here are some small things you can do to make our operations more efficient.
Snow removal and collections: reminders and instructions
- Place your garbage, recycling and organic waste bins at least 30 cm (12 in.) from the sidewalk, curb or street.
- If a major snowstorm is forecast, avoid taking out your bins. Instead, wait until the next collection.
- Remove any snow from the lid and surrounding area. Our refuse collectors appreciate these simple gestures.
Responsibilities of citizens and private contractors
- Do not put snow on public roads. If you have a contractor, they must also not push snow from your driveway onto the street, pavements or municipal parks.
- Fire hydrants must remain clear, whether they are on your property or not. For safety reasons, bylaw R-2007-033 prohibits blowing or pushing snow within a 1.5 m radius of fire hydrants.
- If you have the opportunity to clear snow or ice from the top of the storm drain, do so, as there are over 4,000 storm drains in the City. We will greatly appreciate your gesture.
Parking on public streets
Is it snowing? Remember to clear the street. During snowfall, please park your vehicles in your driveway or garage so that public roads are clear and the City’s snow removal operations can run efficiently.
In exceptional circumstances where you do not have enough parking space during a snowfall, please contact the Municipal Patrol Service at 514-684-6111 to discuss your options.
Do you use the services of a snow removal contractor?
- Ensure that they have a valid city permit, available online (Online Services).
- Contractor signs must display the City permit number or the contractor's name and telephone number, and must be installed after 1 November and removed before 1 April.
- Did you know? The City collaborates with private snow removal companies by keeping them informed of its snow removal operations so that they can coordinate their efforts.
Regulations at a glance
In Dollard-des-Ormeaux, By-law R-2007-033 sets out the rules applicable to snow removal on private property (driveways and other areas) as well as the regulatory requirements related to the City’s public snow removal operations (public roads, sidewalks and other areas). Both residents and contractors are required to comply with the regulations when clearing snow from private property.
The regulations in force prohibit anyone, whether residents or contractors, from:
- To throw, push, blow, or deposit snow or ice on any public property or on the right-of-way of a public road.
- To transport, push, and deposit snow from the driveway to the opposite side of the public road.
- To pile up snow or ice at intersections of public roads in such a way as to obstruct motorists' visibility.
- To pile up snow or ice to a height exceeding 3 metres.
- To throw, push, blow or deposit snow or ice within a radius of 1.5 metres of a fire hydrant.
Whosoever violates this bylaw is liable to a $50 fine.
