To meet the growing demand for electricity and improve service quality in Montréal’s West Island, Hydro-Québec has launched a major project to contribute to increase capacity at Saint-Jean substation in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
The work will unfold in multiple stages over the next four years, and will include:
Most of the work will take place on land owned by Hydro-Québec. However, two nearby municipal lots will also be used during the project, primarily for materials storage and secure site access. One of these sits at the intersection of De Salaberry and Saint-Jean; the other lies to the east of that intersection within the transmission line right-of-way along De Salaberry.
Hydro-Québec will implement a mobility management plan to limit the impact of the work and jobsite facilities on automobile, pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The company will also introduce measures to appropriately manage noise, dust and lighting.
The two municipal lots are expected to be in service from April 1, 2026, to December 31, 2029.
Work to be completed in 2030
The work is expected to continue until 2030. Once complete, the project will improve grid robustness and ensure a more reliable power supply to the area’s homes and businesses.
Hydro-Québec is working closely with the city of Dollard-des-Ormeaux and will hold a webinar on March 26, 2026, to provide information and answer questions from the public about the work.
