The City of Dollard-des-Ormeaux is pleased to announce that it has obtained financial assistance under Component 1 of the Oasis program, overseen by the ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs. This first phase aims to support municipalities in planning green infrastructure to address the effects of climate change.
What is the Oasis program?
The Oasis program is a government grant initiative stemming from the 2030 Plan for a Green Economy, which encourages cities to integrate sustainable planning solutions to adapt to heat waves and heavy rainfall, weather events that are becoming increasingly frequent. It consists of three components:
- Component 1: Support for greening planning
- Component 2: Support for greening in Québec communities
- Component 3: Support for the sustainability of green infrastructure
The financial assistance granted to the City falls under Component 1 and will allow it to develop a Blue-Green Strategy tailored to its territory.
What is a Blue-Green Strategy?
It is an integrated plan that will help the City mitigate the impacts of heat waves and heavy rainfall through the addition or improvement of green infrastructure. Unlike traditional infrastructure, these use natural or hybrid solutions to:
- Reduce heat islands
- Improve stormwater management
- Create more pleasant and sustainable living environments
What will the City do under Component 1?
The City’s work will consist of:
- Conducting a technical assessment of the territory
- Identifying priority sectors
- Developing a roadmap for future interventions
- Working in collaboration with experts in engineering, planning, and environment
What does this mean for residents?
For now, this is a strategic planning phase. There will therefore be no immediate work. However, this planning will enable the City to:
- Improve quality of life in the long term
- Reduce the impacts of extreme heat and heavy rainfall
- Integrate nature more intelligently into urban spaces
Although Dollard-des-Ormeaux already enjoys numerous parks, green spaces, and peaceful residential neighbourhoods, the Blue-Green Strategy will take things even further. The goal is to enhance this quality of life by integrating planning solutions that reduce the impacts of heat islands and heavy precipitation—while preserving the lively and green character of our City.
The City will keep you informed of the next steps.
A greener future begins here, in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
