Coyotes in urban areas: Coexisting safely

Share

You may have crossed paths with a coyote in your neighborhood. These encounters can be surprising, but don’t worry: coyotes in the city are not necessarily dangerous. With a few simple precautions, we can peacefully coexist with this urban wildlife.

How to react if you encounter a coyote:

  • Stay calm.
  • Give it enough space to escape.
  • Don’t let your dog interact with it.
  • Move away calmly, avoiding turning your back.
  • Always maintain eye contact with the coyote.
  • If it approaches too closely, make noise or wave your arms to deter it.

Behaviors to avoid:

  • Never feed the coyote.
  • Never approach it, even if it seems peaceful or injured.

The presence of coyotes in urban areas is a natural phenomenon. By following these simple guidelines, we can reduce risks for ourselves and our pets while allowing coyotes to move safely.

You can report the presence of a coyote by calling the Info-Coyote line at 438-872-COYO (2696).
