On April 17, our teams began mechanical excavation of the stumps of all the Buckthorn trees felled last month. Work is progressing well within the perimeter of phase 1 of the project.
The next step will be to amend and mulch the planting area with Ramial chipped wood (RCW). This will enable the native tree, shrub and perennial species planned for the reforestation, which will take place over the summer season, to develop in optimal conditions for their growth.

In the next few weeks, our teams will be felling Buckthorn trees/shrubs, an invasive exotic plant that is endangering our native tree species in the woods of the Centennial Park.
Native of Eurasia and introduced to Quebec in the early 20th century, Buckthorn is a particularly invasive shrub in Montreal, adapting to a wide variety of environments. Its leaves, which emerge in early Spring, create a dense canopy that impedes the regeneration of our native plants, which is why it is important to maintain a control of its growth.
You may spot our employees in the woods of the Centennial Park, hard at work cutting down this invasive species.
In spring 2024, a reforestation project is scheduled to reintroduce native species of trees, shrubs and perennials to promote biodiversity conservation.
How to recognize Buckthorn?
- Shrubs reach up to 4 to 8 meters in height.
- Buckthorn leaves have curved veins.
- Black, berry-sized fruit bunches emerge in late Summer.
